Before the main exhibition Typojanchi 2021: International Typography Biennale, saisai Talk explores the subject with a variety of aspects. In this talk program with the theme of Typography and Life, we invited six designers and activists from both domestic and overseas who have researched design, life, environment, and typography, to introduce their case studies and works to the public and to communicate with the public. Please check the speaker information below and apply for saisai Talk in advance and fill out the information. Applications can be closed on a first come, first served basis, and we will guide you through the contact information you provide. 뉴닉은 어떻게 뉴스를 살아 숨쉬게 했나
14:10–14:40
양수현은 이 시대에 필요한 뉴스 콘텐츠를 전달하는 ‘뉴닉’에서 브랜딩을 담당해왔다. 자신을 포함한 많은 젊은 세대가 기존 매체, 기존 전달방식의 뉴스를 읽거나 보지 않는다는 사실을 지적하며, 새로운 세대를 위한 새로운 서비스로서 만들어진 뉴스레터 플랫폼 뉴닉을 소개한다. 뉴닉은 그들의 서비스를 구독하는 사람들을 ‘뉴니커’로 규정하고, 뉴스레터 속 화자로서의 캐릭터 ‘고슴이’를 개발하는 등 뉴스의 전달에 있어 생생한 효율과 친근함을 모두 거머쥐는 방식을 고안해내었다. 정보에 생생한 생명력을 불어넣은 뉴닉의 브랜딩과 운영방식의 과정을 공유한다.
Soohyun Yang, Seoul ● How Did NEWNEEK Give Life to the News? ● 14:10–14:40 (GMT+9) ● Soohyun Yang has been in charge of branding at NEWNEEK, which publishes news content for the needs of these days. NEWNEEK has been introducing new services and designs for the new generation, including developing the main character of the newsletter as a living speaker.
정다운, 서울
행동을 바꾸는 디자인

정다운은 사물의 버려진 이후에 관심이 많으며 다양한 방식으로 이를 알리고 있다. ‘일회용 컵이 없는 카페가 가능할까?’라는 질문을 시작으로 지속 가능한 일상을 제안하는 플랫폼 ‘보틀팩토리’를 운영하고있으며, 텀블러 대여 서비스를 국내에 최초로 소개했다. 그 취지를 이웃의 상점들과 함께 공유하는 ‘유어보틀위크’, 제로웨이스트 마켓인 ‘채우장’을 기획하고 운영하며, 새로운 시도의 과정에서 맞닥뜨리게 되었던 여러 가지예기치 못한 여러움과 그 해결 과정 및 성과를 공유하며 환경과 생명에 대한 적극적인 관심과 변화를 촉구한다.
Dawoon Chung, Seoul ● Design Changing Beliefs and Attitudes ● 14:40–15:10 (GMT+9) ● Dawoon Chung continues her activities with an interest in objects after being abandoned. Starting with the question of ‘Is it possible to have a cafe without disposable cups?’, she has opened a cafe called Bottle Factory that proposes sustainable daily life, and introduced a tumbler rental service for the first time in Korea. Dawoon Chung conducts various life experiments that can be designed for the environment and people.

비그 스튜디오(Byggstudio)는 그래픽 디자이너 한나 닐슨과 소피아 어스터러스가 2006년에 설립한 노르웨이/스웨덴 기반의 디자인 스튜디오이다. 공공을 위한 공간 제작과 디자인에 중점을 두고 조경과 미술, 입체와 평면의 경계를 넘나들며 장소에 생명력을 불어넣는 다양한 프로젝트를 진행해왔으며, 어린이들을 위한 놀이의 가치를 드높일 수 있는 야외 환경과 공간 디자인에도 특별한 관심을 갖고 있다. 전통적이고 지역적인 특색의 공예적 기법을 디자인에 적용하거나, 특정 지역의 고유한 식물을 수집하여 사이니지를 만드는 등, 평범하고 무기력했던 공공 공간을 활기찬 공간으로 살아 숨 쉬게 변모시켰던 과정들을 이야기한다.
Byggstudio, Stokholm/Oslo ● Typography, Materials, and Craft ● 15:10–15:40 (GMT+9) ● Byggstudio is a Norwegian-Swedish multidisciplinary design studio founded in 2006 by graphic designers Hanna Nilsson and Sofia Østerhus. Byggstudio works with both commissioned and self-initiated projects in the boundaries of design, landscape architecture and art focusing on placemaking and design for public space. Their works include research, concept development, design and content for three- and two-dimensional visual identities, wayfinding, environment concepts and exhibitions, as well as printed matter. Also, their special interest is outdoor environments and all aspects of the process designing places with high play value, for and with children.

하기와라 슌야(Shunya Hagiwara)는 웹 디자인 및 디지털 아트 분야에서 기획, 디렉션, 개발, 디자인 운영 등의 다양한 작업을 진행하고 있다. 2015년부터 타마미술대학에 출강하고 있으며, IDPW.org 회원으로서 일본 미디어 페스티벌 어워드를 수상하였고, Trans Books 조직 위원회의 위원으로도 활동하고 있다. 스스로 매우 중요하게 생각하는 키워드인 ‘정보에 대한 능동성’을 기반으로, 자신의 주된 활동 영역인 인터넷이라는 매체, 또는 그 외연의 ‘인터넷스러운 것들’에게 생명력을 부여해온 작업을 소개한다. 엉뚱하고 유머러스 발상, 사람들의 심리에 대한 깊이있는 고찰, 그리고 익숙한 개념들의 과감한 트위스트를 통해 매체에 대한 한계와 고정관념을 벗어났던 경험을 공유한다.
Shunya Hagiwara, Tokyo ● Between Uploading and Downloading ● 15:55–16:25 (GMT+9) ● Shunya Hagiwara is a web designer and programmer with interdisciplinary expertise in programming and design. After working for Semitransparent design, in 2012 he set up his own business. He’s heavily involved in production-related work such as planning, conceptualization, direction, implementation, design, and operational work primarily in the areas of web design and digital art. Shunya Hagiwara served as a part-time lecturer at Tama art university since 2015, and received Japan Media Arts Festival Award as a member of IDPW.org. He is also a member of the organizing committee of the book event Trans Books.

생명은 발신한다

박영신은 ‘이안디자인’ 아트디렉터이며, 북아티스트이자 그림책 작가이다. 1983년 《어머니책》, 《샘이깊은물》을 시작으로 세밀화 도감, 국어사전, 그림책 등을 디자인했으며, 자연과 생명, 이미지를 주제로 자기 주도 작업을 병행해왔다. 새소리를 모스부호로 표기한 《Bird & Bird Sound》, 생명을 품은 씨앗으로 구성한 책 《God’s Garden》처럼 새로운 방법을 담은 북아트를 시도하며 2020년 ‘책의 날’에 디자인 공로상을 수상했다. 생물 저마다가 자신의 감각과 지능을 계발해 외부로 정보를 보내고 또 받아들이며 ‘발신하는 것’을 가장 대표적인 생명의 특성으로 간주하며, 스스로가 1995년부터 긴 시간 동안 스스로 발신해 온 다양한 시도와 사유들을 되돌아본다
Youngshin Park, Seoul ● Life Radiates ● 16:25–16:55 (GMT+9) ● Youngshin Park is a book artist, picture book writer and art director at Ian Design. She has designed numorous illustrated encyclopedias, Korean dictionaries, and picture books since 1983. Youngshin Park received Design Achievement Award on Book Day in 2020 by attempting new ways of making artbook, such as Bird & Bird Sound, which visualized bird sounds in Morse code, and God’s Garden, a book composed of imagenary seeds.

에리히 브레히뷜(Erich Brechbühl)은 글자에 다양한 재질을 부여하거나 입체적인 구조 안에서 단어와 문장을 시각화하는 등 여러 기술을 통해 단순한 정보 전달의 수단 뿐만 아니라 표현의 재료로서 문자를 활용해 왔다. 견습 시절을 거쳐 2003년 루체른에 자신의 스튜디오 ‘믹서’를 설립하고 세계적인 그래픽 디자이너로 거듭나기까지의 과정과 그의 대표적인 포스터 작업을 소개하며 지금껏 그가 탐색해온 글자의 무궁무진한 가능성을 공유한다.
Erich Brechbühl (Mixer), Luzern ● Type as Image ● 16:55–17:25 (GMT+9) ● Erich Brechbühl is a Lucerne based independent graphic designer and is mainly known for his diverse poster designs – his preferred mode of graphic expression. After studying typography, he became an apprentice graphic designer under Niklaus Troxler and finally opened his own studio, Mixer, in Lucerne in 2003. In 2009, Erich Brechbühl was co-founder of the Weltformat Graphic Design Festival in Lucerne and started the regular exchange meeting for graphic designers called Show & Tell in 2012. He won numerous international awards for his posters and he’s a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) since 2007.
